My Sensitive Skin Story
I wanted to share my sensitive skin story with you. I haven’t written about it and rarely talk about it as it was a difficult time in my life.
In my early twenties I developed a rare skin condition. It occurs around the mouth and lips and causes skin to be flakey and itchy.
Late nights, alcohol and stress from a bad break-up all contributed to the onset. I was embarrassed to leave the house. I didn't want to see friends due to the pain and how my face looked.
Over six months the condition didn't seem to improve. Skin specialists didn't know how to treat it. They prescribed Cortisone, which only masked the issue. I tried all sorts of skincare. I tried organic, lavender and skincare supposedly for allergic skin but they irritated my skin. I smothered on Vaseline and paw paw ointment. It soothed my mouth and stopped me from itching for a while. But then I had a reaction to them, perhaps from overuse or the ingredients, or both.
Eventually, after six long months, the condition cleared up after taking Chinese herbs.
Ten years on my skin is clear but it's still sensitive to the sun, harsh weather and allergies so the skincare I choose is important. La Roche-Posay creates skincare made for sensitive skin. It’s formulated for ultra sensitive or allergic skin with 0% preservatives, parabens, fragrance, alcohol or lanolin. I use Toleriane Ultra, Toleriane Ultra Light , Toleriane Ultra Eye Contour and Toleriane Ultra Overnight. These creams are light, anti-irritating and soothing. The Ultra and Ultra Light moisturising day creams are gentle, non-oily and moisturising for day. I use Ultra Light if it's a warm day as the Ultra is a richer cream. The eye contour cream relieves discomfort and puffiness, calms irritation and dryness. The overnight cream soothes while you sleep so in the morning you have no redness.
La Roche-Posay uses a minimal number of ingredients to reduce the likelihood of irritation. Every product undergoes stringent clinical testing to guarantee efficacy and safety.
While I hope I've endured the last of that skin condition, I am still cautious. I take care of myself, don't drink to excess (too often), keep stress at bay and am very mindful of the products I use on my skin.
