Quick Guide to Bendigo, Victoria

Bendigo is one of my favourite day trip destinations and it's only 1 .5 hours drive away. Here is your quick guide to Bendigo, what to do, where to eat and drink and if you're having too much fun, where to sleep.

SEE/DO

Maticevski: Dark Wonderland

My first stop and often the reason I go to Bendigo, is the Bendigo Art Gallery. Alongside their permanent exhibition, an excellent mix of old and new, the art gallery also holds world-class fashion exhibitions. Past exhibitions include Marilyn Monroe's costumes, Grace Kelly and fashion from LA's FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising)

The current exhibition at the gallery is Maticevski: Dark Wonderland, illustrating the design evolution of the masterful Australian designer Toni Maticevski. Known for his sculptural shapes, textures and use of beading and embellishments, this exhibition is for both the fashion and art lovers. Being an admirer of music, art and dance since he was young, Maticeviski has also created dance costumes for Sydney Dance Company and Ballet Co. Lab, which are on display. Dark Wonderland is a must-see and is running through to November 20th 2016.

The Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival will fill the streets of Bendigo on the 3rd through to the 6th of November 2016. This four day event consists of live performances, workshops and a day long concert over two stages in the beautiful Rosalind Park.

Antiquing is another favourite past time for the Goldfields region. Take a wander down View Street in the Art Precinct, across the road from the art gallery, you'll be sure to find a treasure or two. Find more info on antique stores here and here.

Antiques on View

Fancy more shopping after antiquing? Gathered on View Street has a boutique selection of homewares, fashion accessories and decor, from Karen Walker sunglasses to bedding from Kip & Co.

Next door to Gathered is In The Meadow, a cool clothing store that stocks Cheap Monday, Bul and Le Specs and more.

A trip to Bendigo wouldn't be complete without taking a ride on the vintage "Talking" Trams.

The Dispensary

EAT/DRINK

Harvest Bendigo is the place to go for homemade croissant and pastries.

Pop into The Dispensary for a wine and delicious nibbles after a day of art and shopping. Try the steak tartare, cured kingfish and scallops with a glass of their 'wine of the day'.

Another spot for wine, Wine Bank On Viewis housed in heritage listed bank building in Central Bendigo constructed in 1876.

Masons, a paddock to plate restaurant, was awarded one Chefs Hat this year. Reservations recommended.

STAY

Direct from Melbourne, the Schaller Hotel opened up last year adding a boutique accommodation option to Bendigo.

For longer stays, AirBnb is always a great option.
