The Design Republik
New Australian brand, The Design Republik has brought something different to the fashion market. Each month on the 8th, they will release a curated outfit each for men and women, designed to be functional and timeless. However, production is limited; a challenge to the norm of today's disposable fashion.
In a world of fast fashion, it is encouraging to find a brand that considers the affects on the world and environment, while still designing and producing top-quality garments.
The founders and partners, Kate and Garry Wallace, are veterans of the Australian fashion industry. Kate, worked for Myer for two decades and Garry was a founder of Cotton On. They have combined their years of industry experience and chosen to reject the classic seasonal calendar and opt for a more produce-on-demand approach.
"We’re trying to do something new. We’re very conscious of making to order and limiting the amount of unused garments. We’re doing a limited run,” one of the founders Kate Wallace told Women's Wear Daily.
The first delivery for women featured a double-breasted coat in a two-toned bouclé wool, silk crêpe de chine top and ponte pants. At $350USD for the whole outfit, these beautiful pieces are well below what you would pay for separately. Each month's release are complementary, thereby increasing the versatility of these garments.
They also have created additional pieces to the monthly outfit, such as leather leggings, boyfriend blazers, leather totes and perfectly fitting denim (as worn here). Using Australian & New Zealand merino wools, silks, cashmere, Japanese denim and fair trade organic cottons, the garments are made to last. Made in the same factories as Armani Exchange, Camilla and Marc and Country Road and their denim factories make many of the European brands, you know these garments are quality.
The Design Republik donates to environmental charities to offset its carbon footprint and the Wallaces’ own foundation, Inch by Inch Against Poverty, donates a percentage of the proceeds from its handbag collection to support businesses in developing nations.
As a consumer who is conscious about the impact the fashion industry is having on the world, The Design Republik is innovative and refreshing. And if the fit and quality are as good as their denim, you'll want to pick up every outfit. I know I already do!
