The Pants Update: Jodhpurs
Originating from India in the 1890's, jodhpurs were initially designed for polo players, for ease of movement. In 1897, Queen Victoria, the Monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Empress of India, celebrated her Diamond Jubilee. For the celebrations, the Regent of Jodhpur, Sir Pratap Singh, travelled to England and took with him the Jodhpur Polo team.
It is said that during his visit, Sir Pratap found himself needing a new pair of jodhpurs. He was forced to visit a Savile Row tailor, where he had no option but to reveal their design. The style quickly became popular across the globe. Jodhpurs were used in armies throughout Europe especially cavalry units. Hollywood soon followed suit and directors began wearing them to the sets.
During the 1920's, women began wearing jodhpurs. Designer Coco Chanel was reportedly the first high profile woman to wear them.
The jodhpurs I am wearing are by S&S by Shreeja and Shweta. Traditional in shape, made from luxurious gold jacquard, these pants are glorious. I love how they bring a luxe feel to the outfit, as well as being unexpected and modern at the same time.
