Melbourne Getaway: Things to Do

See this content in the original post

Melbourne is one of those cities that is a pleasure to be lost in. When you are lost in the laneways of the CBD, you come across hidden gems you normally would not find. On the other hand, Melbourne is a city that has so much on offer that it's best to have a list of things to eat, see and do.

The perfect Melbourne getaway consists of great restaurants, shopping and wandering the streets. Here's a list of some of my favourite things to do when I'm home.

Eat and Drink Melbourne

My favourite place to eat is Anada. Delicious well priced sSpanish tapas and raciones, great wine list, lovely atmosphere, unpretentious, it's perfect.

Movida Nextdoor. The cheeky little sister of Movida which, as the title suggests, is next door.

Chin Chin. Have a drink at Gogo Bar downstairs beforehand while waiting for your table, or you can eat here as well with a slightly condensed menu.

Eau de Vie. Experience expensive but well-worth it cocktails made with love and expertise.

The Everleigh. Step into this intimate New York style bar on Gertrude Street. Settle into a booth and let the bartenders surprise you with custom drink orders.

Gelato Messina in Smith Street, Fitzroy. Taste their experimental flavours of the week such as pandan coconut and passionfruit Ice-cream or salted caramel with white choc chip & peanut butter anything. A must try every flavour kind-of-place.

Pony Fish Island. When the weather is good, this bar is an excellent choice with great atmosphere. They also sell food. I will leave it up to you to find the entrance.

Discover Melbourne

Graffiti on Hosier Lane (where Movida restaurants are). Take a walk yourself or join the hoards of tourist groups who walk through there.

Walk Royal Arcade through to Degrave Laneway. Lots of lovely cafes and boutiques here including Marais which stocks Givenchy, Rick Owens and more.

Visit the National Gallery of Victoria and immerse yourself in culture.

ACMI always has great exhibitions such as the Dreamworks Animation exhibition running through until October 2014.

Shop Melbourne

Green with Envy. Stocks many high-end labels including Chloe, Celine and Alexander Wang plus Australian designers. Worth a look if you're into designer labels and the price points that go with them.

H&M at GPO. I'd give it a miss unless you're a lover of high turnover fashion. I saw GPO back in its hey-day, when it housed amazing boutiques such as Willow, Acne, Gorman and Fat. With H&M in their place, the life and soul has disappeared.

Melbourne Emporium. Housing a great many labels and boutiques including Uniqlo. Australia designers are located level 2. Avoid late night shopping and the weekends.

So these are just a few of my Melbourne picks. What are your favourite places?
